  • Magic-Mavs-Raptors-Grizzlies Trade

Magic trades Hedo Turkoglu to Raptors for cash considerations and acquired cash considerations from Dallas as part of a four-team deal.  Mavs trade Jerry Stackhouse and cash considerations to Grizzlies for Greg Buckner; trade Devean George and Antoine Wright to Raptors for Shawn Marion, Kris Humphries, center Nathan Jawai and cash considerations as part of a four-team deal.  The only important players in this trade are Hedo Turkoglu and Shawn Marion.  Antoine Wright may end up starting for the Raptors by default but that isn't saying much.  I'm not sure how much of an impact Hedo will have on the Raptors but I would think that they might be able to contend for one of the bottom 4 playoff spots.  Calderon, Wright, Hedo, Bosh, and Bargnani look like a solid starting 5 on paper.  Marion will help the Mavs on both ends of the floor.  Mavs should be able to fight for a 4 or 5 seed this upcoming season.  Lakers and Spurs are still clearly better than them.  Nuggets, Mavs, and Blazers will battle it out for a 3, 4, and 5 seeds.  Don't sleep on a healthy Jazz team (a big IF) and a healthy Amare run and gun Suns team either.

  • Clippers-Grizzlies Trade

The Clippers traded Zach Randolph to the Grizzlies for Quentin Richardson.  I have no idea why the Grizzlies made this trade.  Randolph is the power forward version of Jamal Crawford.  He takes way too many bad shots and seems to be uncoachable.  He also has a big contract that overpays him.  Having Randolph on the team with slow down the development of their young players like Gay, Mayo, Conley, Thabeet, and Gasol.  On the other hand, it's a great trade for the Clippers.  Getting rid of Randolph means that their frontcourt will no longer be overcrowded. It will allow Blake Griffin to receive more playing time so he can develop.  The Clippers now have a very solid starting five in Davis, Gordon, Thornton, Griffin, and Kaman/Camby.  If they change their offense to a more up-tempo offense they can possibly win 30-40 games.

  • Magic-Nets Trade

Yesterday the Magic traded away Rafer Alston, Tony Battie, and Courtney Lee to the Nets for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson.  It's a good deal for both teams.  The Nets get a good young shooting guard in Lee, a veteran big man in Battie, and a good point guard in Alston.  The trade saves the Nets a lot of money and will allow them to be a player in the 2010 free agent market.  Alston may get traded before or during the season if another team needs a point guard.  For the Magic, it may signal the end of Turkoglu's run in Orlando.  It gives the Magic 4 all-stars or former all-stars in their starting 5.  They felt the need to improve in order to compete with teams like the Celtics and Cavs. Cavs traded for Shaq and they're not done dealing yet.  Celtics will have a healthy Garnett back.  It's unlikely that they would even consider bringing Hedo back.  The Magic now have 4 scorers in their starting 5 and each of them makes a good amount of money.  It wouldn't be wise for them to invest most, if not all of the team's salary cap on 5 scorers that need the ball to be effective.  Turkoglu had a good run; he finally broke out with the Magic and has earned his upcoming contract.

  • Cavs-Suns Trade

Yesterday, the Suns finalized their trade sending Shaq to the Cavs for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic.  The Suns made this move to slash some payroll so they can get under the luxury tax.  It is unlikely that Wallace or Pavlovic will ever suit up for them.  Wallace is likely to receive a buyout then retire and Pavlovic's contract is only partially guaranteed.  For the Cavs, it's a one year gamble to see if Shaq can help Lebron win a championship.  If it works out, then maybe they will both re-sign with the Cavs next summer.  If it doesn't, then the Cavs may be in big trouble.  They will let Shaq walk (or retire) and there is a very realistic chance that Lebron will leave as well.  The Cavs aren't done dealing yet either, at least they shouldn't be.  They still need a power forward and a wing defender.  I would like to see them go after Rasheed Wallace and/or Jason Kidd.  Sheed would space the floor out when they post up Shaq.  Kidd would give them another 3 point shooter and also create for his teammates and also so Lebron wouldn't have to work as hard on offense.
